Post does review Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie

Given how big this book series is, I didn't expect the review for it to be buried in the Weekend section

Wimpy Kid movie posters begin appearing in DC

I've seen one in a bus shelter on 16th St, NW and here's one on the side of a bus courtesy of Kathleen Stocker. As we've noted before, Jeff Kinney was a U of Maryland cartoonist back when.

U of MD's Diamondback's streak of successful cartoonists

See "Diamondback doodlers: Several ’90s cartoonists went big-time with their drawings," By Kristi Tousignant, University of Maryland's Diamondback November 2, 2009. Featured are Frank Cho, Jeff Kinney, and Aaron McGruder. Corey Thomas, who does Watch Your Head, came out of Howard University.

More on Jeff Kinney and Wimpy Kid

The former U of Md cartoonist was featured in USA Today to go with the weekend profile in the NY Times. See "'Wimpy Kid: Last Straw' opens another 'gateway' to reading," By Bob Minzesheimer, USA TODAY January 12 2009. At the end of this article, one of the five series he recommends to get kids reading is Calvin and Hobbes. I always liked the Encyclopedia Brown books he also suggests and recently picked some up for my daughter (who reads Wimpy Kid too).

Former U of MD cartoonist Jeff Kinney and Wimpy Kid profiled in NYT

Appearing on Sunday, but we've got it for you early - "Jeff Kinney: A Profile of the ‘Wimpy Kid’ Author," By JAN HOFFMAN, New York Times January 11, 2009 and "Hapless Boy Wins Eager Friends," By JAN HOFFMAN, New York Times January 11, 2009. If you get the paper, as I do, you'll have to remember that this is in the Style & Fashion section for some reason.

Jeff Kinney, former U of Maryland cartoonist, on YouTube

This has been linked to from all over (Dirk Deppey, Brian Fies), but I'll toss it up here too. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid author, Jeff Kinney, a former U of Maryland cartoonist, is interviewed on YouTube by the Borders bookstore chain. Kinney will be at Baltimore Comic-Con this weekend much to my daughter's interest. Here's the interview and his talk for the kids in the audience.

BTW, Fies' book on his mother's cancer is very good. Buy it.

Whoops - Jeff Kinney went to the U of Maryland and did a comic strip for them

Boy, have I missed linking to a lot of Diary of a Wimpy Kid articles as I didn't realize that Jeff Kinney did a comic strip for the University of Maryland's Diamondback (as did Frank "Liberty Meadows" Cho and Corey "Watch Your Head" Thomas). If there's any interest, let me know in the comments and I'll cull my Comics Research Bibliography holding file for links. In the meantime, see "Story of the weak: Jeff Kinney's 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' draws on relatable school experiences," by David Mehegan, Boston Globe Staff, April 7, 2008.
